The Fabric of the Ancient World: the concept of integration fields and the practice of Global Ancient History
Dr Fábio Augusto Morales Federal University of Santa Catarina
This talk discusses the ways in which the fabrics of the Hellenistic world were stitched together, or, to put it less metaphorically, the societies of the Hellenistic period constructed and were constructed by the connections they established between themselves. These connections are discussed in terms of the actions and corresponding social fields of integration that modulate them. Specifically, I explore the problem of the interaction between the Panhellenic, imperial and commercial fields in the Hellenistic period from three perspectives: global microhistories, incorporated comparisons and integrated history. In doing so, I seek to discuss the problem of mediation between the macro and micro scales, as well as to experiment with the possibilities and the limits of ‘Afroeurasia’ as a new unit of analysis for Ancient History.
